I was again at my parents place for the past 3 days. Well, this time is just for the fun of it. Grace got all crazy playing with her grandparents. Grandpa bought a toy truck (the kind that transport new vehicles) which also include 2 buses and 2 cars. (just in case you wondering, Grace loves cars....don't ask me why). Well, she was playing all sorts of things with this toy truck, car dealers, race car and truck, towing service.
Talk about the towing service, dad has an old Walkman, which was confiscated from his naughty students many years back. And so Grace took the Walkman, extended the aerial and viola....the crane or whatever that is used to tow the cars and truck. Her tow service number is "386"...she gave the number herself. And so, dad will pretend that there's an accident, then called the number "386" and she will answer and get to work.
Now, after playing this for some time, she shifted to other things, when grandma came and "dialled" the number "386". Note that she is now busy with other things, and this is how she turned down her grandma.
Grandma: "386", "386" there's an accident here. I need towing service now.
Grace: Err....she's now around.
Then during dinner, grandma tried again.
Grandma: "386", "386" there's an accident here. I need towing service now.
Grace: I no longer provide the service. I already sold off the towing thing.
We all had a good laugh.

Juggling Balls
Well, here's the story of the juggling balls that I mentioned earlier, here.
Now, Grace had been watching Hi-5 (Australian cast) since she was like 8 months old (or it may be earlier) and since she was hooked! Just like how I was hooked to scrapbooking....grin. This is the only show that she likes and will watch at this moment. No other cartoons, not that I don't allow, it's she refuses, for some reason. Might be fear of the characters.
Anyway, back to my story. I must say, she learned a lot from the Hi-5 series, especially on some English words (you see, we speak to her mainly in Mandarin and only a little of English), and she picked up her singing and dancing skills there too. Though she's very talented in both. Well, whenever she sees something new from the show, she will ask, "Can Jia Yun (her name) do that?". If I answer this, "Yes", she will follow with, "Mummy, I want". LOL. So this juggling thing, she once saw and asked and ended up saying, "Mummy, when you go to Borders, please buy the juggling balls for me". After a few months of saying the same, I finally decided to get her a juggling book and kit. I know, I know, she won't be able to jug (or even start practicing) until she's older, but let's just say this is to save my ears! But it ended up me being a clown! Sigh...sigh.
So that day, I think it's a Monday, while having dinner, I told her to quickly finish up her dinner so we could go Borders. Actually, it's me whom wanted to get a scrapbooking/ card making magazine there. But as soon as she heard, "Borders", she says, "Mummy, please buy the juggling balls". So I drove her to Queensbay Mall. The car park was amazingly quite full for a weekday, forcing us to make a few rounds in search of a parking space. This then is our little conversation:
Mummy: Hmmm....no place to park. So many cars today.
Grace: Why so many people?
Mummy: Because, they are here for shopping.
Grace: Why they are here shopping?
Mummy: (just to tease the little girl)....they are here to buy the juggling balls.
Grace: (starts to panic).....Then, after they buy, there's no more juggling balls for me! Mummy, quick...run to Borders.
And just because I tease her, I get to run to Borders....
(just a little update on my progress in juggling balls: still looks like a silly clown, dropping all the balls)

Never underestimate a child
Yesterday night Grace was playing with her set of toys, which include a Play-Doh cooking set. While she was playing, she saw one of the Play-Doh "recipe" card. I noticed that she stared at it for some time, then she lift her head and say "roll" then node her head.
A little story on what "roll" means. Now, she had another Play-Doh fun factory barrel set which I kept in the wardrobe. Why did I keep it in the wardrobe? To avoid Grace seeing it and asking to play with it all the time. Why "roll"? When playing Play-Doh I taught Grace to roll the "doh" and make things (i.e spaghetti) out of it. So whenever she wants to play it, she will say "roll".
Ok, now back to the story. As it was quite late last night, I told her, "Not tonight, we play tomorrow, ok?" She node her head.
Morning came and I was thinking (to myself) that I will let her play "roll" later in the afternoon. But Grace thinks otherwise. Puzzles for the little one
Grace has a number of puzzles which some of them are still too advance for her. There's this Bible Puzzles, which I saw from Christianbook.com, which contains 3 double sided puzzles with 12, 24 and 36 pieces respectively. Though this is too advance for her, I will put the puzzles together myself, in front of her and then teach her on the bible stories that the pictures depict.
Other than the bible puzzle, we have 2 early Puzzles set which we redeemed using our Bonuslink points. Each of this set has 4 puzzles ranging from 3 pieces to 6 pieces. Earlier on when I obtained the puzzle, I would put it together for Grace and tell her stories of the picture. This:
About 3 weeks ago, I started to teach Grace to put together the 3-piece puzzle which assemble to a fish. Initially, Grace would just bring me the pieces randomly and asked me to put the puzzle together. When I ask her to put it together herself, she would need my help to bring her the correct piece.
We abandoned the puzzle activity for about 2 weeks cause I was so busy with the Church Children Holiday camp. Today, Grace saw the puzzle in her cupboard and requested to play with it. I took the 3 pieces out and shuffle it. Then to my surprised, she could put it all together, needing some help in securing the joints. What a great pace children are learning at!
I will start to teach her another 3-piece puzzle which assembles to a car next.

Teaching Grace to read
During my confinement, my sister-in-law Jessie, introduced me to a flash card system by GD Resources; "How to raise an intelligent child programme". Actually, before then I already heard of flash card system and is planning to invest in one.
So during that time, I search in the Internet for more information and for dealers of the resources in Penang. Later on I invested on 2 sets of Ready-To Read Kid, English and Mandarin respectively.
I started on the programme immediately after the purchase (and off course after reading the guidelines....grin). Then Grace was about 2 to 3 months old. I wanted to teach my baby both English and Mandarin at the same time. So there are 10 cards to flash at each session, 5 for English and 5 for Mandarin.
When Grace was little, she will look at the words while I read it aloud. That was how the flashing session started. As Grace grew, the flashing sessions turn from easy to harder and then harder. She started to want things her own way. So I have to do things differently now. Instead of sitting opposite her, I let her sit on my lap and then flashing the cards while pointing to the words. It worked....but not for very long.
So, I have to find another way to attract her. This time, I let her sit opposite to me and I then put one of the cards on the floor in front of her. When she reaches for it, I read the wordings aloud. It worked too! She enjoys collecting all the cards.
It then came to a period where she refuses to even look at the card. Whenever I wanted to show her the cards, she will just look somewhere else, mischievously. Or she will just lie down on the floor or bed! Argh....great.....how to proceed? how to proceed?!?!? I can't force her, because even if I flash the card, she will not pay attention. So I take it easy with her for a few days, and then a few weeks.
Until recently, I started on the cards again. This time, she is cooperative. She will look at the wordings and even make signs or point to the physical item of the wordings. Whew.....at least she learns from it. Every time I asked her if she wants to read and look at words, she will node and follow me to the room where I keep the cards. At least, some progress.
Till now, I am still clueless on how many words she could recognise. She just refuses to talk even now at 20 months! I guess I will just have to be patient.

Think out of the box!!
Everyday Grace will surely surprise us with one of her new found ability or even with a new gesture.
Yesterday my mother-in-law make some noodles ("lam mee") and asked a few friends to come over for dinner. So there it was a crowd of people sitting in our living hall looking and laughing at Grace's movement and reaction. Then, Grace showed us her new found game, a role playing kind of game. She's there using her stack and nest barrels as bowls, displaying it nicely on top her Imaginarium (that'sthe brand) wooden sets barrel (use it like a stove or counter), a spoon and a plastic container in hand, playing cooking and eating. What a tremendous scene. It's a pity I don't have it snapped as photos.
Fear not, cause she did that again today! Here's some of the photos.
You will never know what she's capable of and what she will be up to. In the afternoon, she was so busy pushing her toys container (a plastic storage box) to place it in between the coffee table and the sofa. I was thinking what she is up to this time. Then, there she is using the storage box as a couch. Sitting on top of the box with the sofa as her back rest and the coffee table as her leg rest. Oh dear oh dear!
What can I say? She will just make our days though tired, but full of surprises and laughter.

Bought something again!!
I bought something from Borders again! Ghosh....I guess I need to ask Borders if they have any loyalty program, cause I am visiting them every week and almost most of the weeks I went back with a bag of goodies!
Good for little kids. I can use it for dual purpose. One to show the kids in Sunday School this Sunday (I'm teaching on God's marvellous creation this week) and two for little Grace to ponder on. I showed her the book and she's kinda interested in some of the pages, like the Birds and Sea Animal pages. Another way to teach her words! But have to be careful, it's not a board book and Grace is a little rough with books.
Then, there was this "Paint and Make Jungle Animals" ~ no glue or scissors need for only RM17.90. Amazing. There's 8 ready made cardboards of 8 different animals. All I need to do was paint it and join the pieces together, just like a puzzle. 
And tada......animals for display. I'm going to use it during this Sunday God's Creation lesson. A good way to attract little ones. I'm sure to use it to teach Grace as well, when she grows a little bigger.

A tiring but enjoyable day!
Exhausted. Yeah one word says it all! This is how I feel right now, sitting in front of my computer, typing this post.
I normally don't have much time to do things that I please. During the day, almost all of my time is dedicated to the little mischievous one. Sometimes, I may ask my mother in law to play with Grace, but that will only last, the most, 45 minutes. She will then starts to, "Mee ah.....mee ah".
When then do I have time for blogs and other stuff (I am serving in children ministry in my church)? Well, only during Graces' nap time, which is only about 1 hour and like now.....nearly midnight!
Why am I so exhausted today? Well, as you can see from a series of photos below, 
I was busy playing with the active little girl I have at home. There's drawing, digging out books to read, sticking stickers, building blocks, playing balls (kicking and rolling) and a new found interest, remote controlled cars! 
Initially I thought Grace would be afraid of remote controlled cars. But, when I tried it for her, she loves it! Seems a little tomboy to me...wahahaha.
I was busy playing with the active little girl I have at home. There's drawing, digging out books to read, sticking stickers, building blocks, playing balls (kicking and rolling) and a new found interest, remote controlled cars! Initially I thought Grace would be afraid of remote controlled cars. But, when I tried it for her, she loves it! Seems a little tomboy to me...wahahaha.You might be thinking, controlling car should not take a lot of energy. Well think again. Grace is holding the remote control and she only knows the forward button. So, whenever there's an obstacle, there's this remote-controlled mummy, adjusting the car. Plus, there's no sitting down time when she's on the move. She will make sure I am also on the move so as to adjust the car the moment it got stuck. Very demanding, but again, I must say, all is worth for that smile in Grace.
Playing dress-up...
It's so heart warming to see how Grace has grown physically as well as in her knowledge.
She now wants to do a whole lot of things. When I change her, she will lift her hands through the right path through the sleeves as well as sliding her legs through the pants or dress. Huh...the feeding time is really a mess....she will want to hold a spoon herself and scoop up food to feed herself. What else?....Hmmm...There's this red boots that she likes to wear and walk around the house. Drawing is her favourite.She will scribble something and then tell us what she's drawing. Cute!
Yesterday, I thought of letting her try out dressing her Pooh bear. And....she enjoyed it. Trying to get the hat fit on Pooh's head. Here's a short video of the fun!
To my surprise, this morning she points to the pile of old clothes, demanding to dress up the Pooh bear again! Oh...am I giving myself more work to do??? Guess, the joy of seeing her smile and laugh supersedes all!
